Azerbaijan is ahead of many Muslim countries on gender equality. The first secular school for girls was opened in the capital of Baku in 1901, and after 17 years, women received the right to elect and be elected to parliament. Such a breakthrough was not in place even in the UK and Germany at that time. Almost 30 years ago, Azerbaijani independence was restored, but, unfortunately, it was not possible to get rid of conservative gender stereotypes. If you add here the desire of some families to deprive girls of education or support, when they want to choose their own path, force them to start a family at an early age, the situation is even more aggravated. And the statistics on girls is also not reassuring. The number of recorded abortions compared to those 15 years ago increased twice and reckons more than 37k, and for every 100 girls there are 114 boys, not 105 as it is supposed to be.
